OPERATION NOOK

Awhile back I talked about Backhaus and how I was putting together a care packages to send to him in Afghanistan. When I told one of my co-workers, she went to Costco and bought bulk boxes of Slim Jims, Oreos, Blow Pops, and Orbit gum for me to add to the boxes.

And then she had an even better idea...to chip in and buy Backhaus a Nook loaded with books that he and the other Marines in his platoon could read. I checked with his mom, who said the guys will read anything they can get their hands on--even if they've never been big readers in the past. So we're implementing OPERATION NOOK. And the reason I'm mentioning it here on the blog is so that if you'd like to donate, you can.

I'm going to be honest. I feel a little weird talking about donations, especially when you don't know Backhaus from a hill of beans. But this kid means a lot to me, and if I could afford to do this alone, it would already be done. And there might be some of you who saw my first post and want to do something, but don't have the time to stock and send a care package. So if you would like to donate to OPERATION NOOK, the link is in the sidebar. If not...well, it's not like I'll know the difference.

Between my co-workers and the donation link, we're going to collect until we reach enough for the Nook Simple Touch and ten books, which will put the total around $250. Once that figure is met, I will turn off the link. If that amount is exceeded, any donations over the amount will be returned. Additionally, the names of everyone who donated to the fund will be added to a card that will be included with the Nook when we send it.

Thanks,
~Trish

Just sent you a donation! I don't know many Marines, but if you're accepting book ideas for them, maybe FEED by Mira Grant, or THE BOOK OF LIES by Brad Meltzer?

Thank you! And I'll definitely add those books to the to-buy list.
